ALBI, France -- Slovakian rider Peter Sagan won the hilly seventh stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish on Friday, and Daryl Impey kept the overall race lead.
Sagan held off a challenge from John Degenkolb of Germany to clinch his first stage victory in this year's Tour and extend his lead in the contest for the sprinters' green jersey. Italian sprinter Daniele Bennati was third.

Tour de France 2013, stage nine: Ireland's Dan Martin claims maiden stage win as Chris Froome stays in yellow

After lighting a fire under the 100th Tour de France yesterday, Chris Froome proved himself equally adept at putting them out as Ireland's Dan Martin won his first Tour stage on a thrilling day in the Pyrenees.

Froome was left to fight a defensive battle alone after the famed Sky train came off the rails on the first of the day's five categorised climbs.

He got out of the saddle at least half a dozen times to cover attacks off the front, playing a fascinating game of cat and mouse as Movistar's Nairo Quintana kicked out four times in the space of two kilometres on the final climb, the category one Hourquette d'Ancizan, before quickly being hauled back in each time.

As that squabble went on, Martin moved clear along with Jakob Fuglsang to take the long descent to Bagneres-de-Bigorre alone, with the Garmin-Sharp man winning in a short sprint to the line.

Froome finished 14th, 20 seconds back, as part of a group containing rivals Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador, Joaquim Rodriguez and Cadel Evans.

Froome's chief lieutenant Richie Porte had been dropped as part of Sky's troubles, eventually finishing more than 10 minutes down as Valverde moved into second place in the general classification, one minute and 25 seconds behind Froome.

Tony Martin wins the 11th stage of this year's Tour de France, while Chris Froome extends his lead over the main GC contenders. Martin, who is still recovering from a horrible fall on the opening stage, posted a time of 36min 29sec over the 33km time trial. Froome, despite coming second in the stage, now leads the Tour by 3min 25sec from Alejandro Valverde. Marcel Kittel frustrates Mark Cavendish in stage 12, winning the 218km Fougères to Tours race in a photo finish. Cavendish was looking for his 25th Tour de France stage win, which would have moved him level with André Leducq for third all-time in Tour history.
